The Parnai Hydroelectric Project (HEP) is one of Jammu & Kashmir's significant renewable energy initiatives, designed to strengthen regional power generation while improving irrigation infrastructure for local communities.
Located in District Poonch, the project has an installed capacity of 37.5 MW and is expected to generate approximately 224 Million Units (MU) of clean electricity annually. Beyond energy production, the project is engineered to provide reliable irrigation to nearly 4,000 hectares of agricultural land in Mendhar, supporting long-term agricultural productivity and rural development.
As the Project Management Consultant (PMC), Rodic Consultants is responsible for overseeing quality, safety, engineering coordination, construction monitoring, and project execution throughout the development lifecycle.
The Parnai Hydroelectric Project is a run-of-river hydroelectric project situated on the Suran River in the Poonch district of Jammu & Kashmir.
Unlike conventional storage dams, run-of-river hydro projects generate electricity by utilizing the river's natural flow with minimal water storage, making them an environmentally sustainable solution for renewable energy generation.
The project follows a carefully designed hydroelectric process:
Water from the river is diverted using a barrage that regulates flow into the hydroelectric system.
The diverted water travels through a 9.2-kilometre tunnel, allowing it to gain hydraulic head before reaching the powerhouse.
Inside the powerhouse, three turbine-generator units convert the energy of flowing water into renewable electricity.
After electricity generation, water is safely returned to the river and further utilized for irrigation across thousands of hectares of farmland in the Mendhar region.
The project contributes approximately 224 MU of renewable electricity every year, helping reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Reliable water availability supports nearly 4,000 hectares of farmland, strengthening agricultural productivity.
The project improves essential infrastructure in the border district of Poonch, supporting regional economic development.
As a run-of-river hydroelectric project, it minimizes environmental impact while maximizing renewable energy generation.
Rodic Consultants serves as the Project Management Consultant (PMC) for the project.
